The form and decoration of this console relates closely to furniture made for Harewood House built for Edwin Lascalles, 1st Baron Harewood between 1759 and 1771 with interiors designed by Robert Adam and furniture by Thomas Chippendale. The motifs of the anthemion and rams heads, a signature of Adam style Neo-Classicism, can be seen throughout furniture at Harewood including a library table illustrated in Christopher Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, vol. II, p. 244, fig. 446 and a pair of pier tables in the music room bearing a similar carved freeze and fluted tapering feet.
